ADHD Assessments

Brief ADHD Screening for Children

Given the costs of formal testing, and waitlists, our team offer screening for ADHD, and can provide a provisional recommendations letter.

This may be helpful in the school setting, for other treatment providers and for the GP or Paediatrician.

It is important to be aware this screening has limitations.

Limitations of Screening: When we screen for a specific problem, it can indicate that an issue is present or not, but the screening does not allow us to fully examine a problem in depth. For example, an ADHD screen does not rule out cognitive impairments, or help us identify challenges such as dyslexia that may be co-occurring. These can only be assessed by administering cognitive assessments such as the WISC-5.

Screening does not benchmark academic performance - this would be done using the WIAT-4.  This would be needed to diagnose a specific learning disability.

Funding bodies, educational settings and paediatricians may request or prefer a formal assessment that includes the WISC-5 and WIAT-4, in conjunction with a written report in order to apply for additional classroom support funding, or trial medications.

We note that these tests are not always required in the diagnosis of ADHD, but they are necessary for a comprehensive evaluation.

At Mindworx Psychology we firmly believe one test battery does not fit everyone.  The Psychologist will recommend testing based on their initial assessment after meeting you/your child.

Diagnostic ADHD assessment with full report and recommendations

Many of our team have a special interest in ADHD and neurodiversity.

Some children are referred for ADHD assessment because their behaviour or ability to focus and attend falls outside the range of expected age-appropriate behaviour at school, home or both.

Behavioural concerns may include difficulties around hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggression, oppositional behaviours, sustaining attention and/or disruptions to friendships or learning.

Accurate assessments are important. A comprehensive and detailed assessment is a tool that parents can use to understand their child’s strengths, weaknesses and areas of challenge. A thorough report and specific recommendations can support ADHD children to obtain any help and support or accomodations needed to flourish.

There is no single test for ADHD. All assessments require a comprehensive developmental and medical history to be taken, and the psychologist may (with your permission) request to liaise with your child’s school in order to fully understand any issues or concerns.

A structured ADHD assessment with a diagnositic report may include cognitive (e.g. WISC-5) and academic testing (e.g. WIAT-4), in addition to screening for neurodiversity and across a range of mental health areas such as anxiety, mood and other factors that may be an alternate explanation for ADHD symptoms.

There is no single test for adult ADHD. After you meet with our team, we will be able to suggest what testing will be best for your unique self.

We will typically recommend you begin by booking in for our standard series (6 appointments) with one of our team who has an interest in adult ADHD.

In the appointments we will discuss your symptoms, specific challenges, needs and also your budget and desire for testing and formal assessment reports. We will provide psycho-education and strategies as needed.

We value transparency. We appreciate that cognitive testing and report writing can be expensive, and adult diagnosis typically does not depend on it. We also appreciate that clients may have a preference to do extended testing to fully understand their strengths and weaknesses.

People commonly ask how long testing takes.  Frustrating as it may be to hear, it varies.  For many adults without a complex mental health history, a diagnosis will be possible in a few sessions.

You are unique. There is no single test for ADHD. Some clients present with complex histories that require more assessment than others.  Until we meet you we don’t know how simple or complicated your assessment will be.

We will provide a clear estimate after meeting you for initial assessment, and understanding your specific needs.

Cognitive Assessments (e.g. WISC-V, WPPSI-IV)

Cognitive tests and assessments are used to determine learning capabilities by identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses. We can look at areas such as processing speed, or memory, or spatial and abstract reasoning.

Results are most typically used to provide a profile to assist parents and schools with the development of individual intervention and learning plans. Because we can break down problem areas, these types of tests are often good to uncover learning difficulties or understand what is causing problems in the classroom.

Assessment is formal.

A developmental history is taken prior to testing. Following testing, the Psychologist will score and analyse the test results in conjunction with other relevant information gathered.

A formal written report with recommendations is provided.

A feedback session is provided.

Typcially we administer the Weschler tests - WPPSI (preschool), WISC (child) or WAIS (adult), often in conjunction with WIAT-III if testing relates to academic concerns for a student.

Educational Assessments (e.g. WIAT-4)

Educational tests and assessments are used to measure a child’s academic ability in a range of areas including reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic, listening comprehension, and oral expression.

These assist in identifying particular areas of academic strength or weakness.

This can help to understand why a child is having problems with learning, problems at school, or difficulties in specific subjects.

We most commonly administer: WIAT - Wechsler Individual Achievement Test.

Testing for Autism (e.g. ADOS-2)

Many of our team have a special interest in Autism.

Children may be referred for an Autism assessment because they seem to be neurodiverse.

Behavioural concerns may include difficulties around autistic meltdown, communication styles, "oppositional behaviours", intense interests or a need for routine.

All assessments require a comprehensive developmental and medical history to be taken, and the psychologist may (with your permission) request to liaise with your child’s school in order to fully understand any issues to be investigated.

A thorough Autism assessment with a diagnositic report may include cognitive and academic testing in addition to screening for ADHD.

There is no single test for Autism. After you meet with our team, we will be able to suggest what testing will be best for your unique self.

People are unique

We love testing, assessment, early intervention, and getting to the bottom of things.  That said, we don't offer test appointments without meeting you first. We want to understand the purpose of the testing, what you want to achieve, and explore exactly what testing will be right for your situation.
